Geriatric Dental Clinic

At the Geriatric Dental Clinic, volunteer dentists provide a full range of care for seniors. This is one of the few gerodontic centers in the world, and is also a postgraduate teaching clinic. Working under the supervision of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, the dentists specialize in dental care for the aged, such as gum problems, prosthetics, restoration, and more. A mobile dental unit now makes house calls.

The Geriatric Dental Clinic is intended for women above the age of 60 and men over the age of 65. The mobile dental unit treats individuals over the age of 18 who are housebound.

The main dental clinic is located at Yad Sarah House in Jerusalem. The Mobile Dental Unit offers dental treatment in the patient’s home. Portable dental kits are available at seven locations throughout the country.

About the Service

At Yad Sarah’s Geriatric Dental Clinic, elderly individuals receive excellent dental care offered by a staff of volunteer dental professionals- dentists, gum specialists, hygienists, etc. The clinic offers a full range of dental procedures, including preventive care. Available treatments include plaque scaling, fillings, root therapy, regular and surgical extractions, minor surgery, immediate and cast posts, ceramic crowns, as well as partial and full dentures.

In addition, the Mobile Dental Clinic serves individuals over the age of 18 who are unable to visit a dental clinic. Like the Geriatric Dental Clinic, the Mobile Dental Clinic is under the auspices of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem. A volunteer dentist and an assistant staff the Mobile Clinic, which performs the same treatments in a patient’s home that are available at the Jerusalem clinic. Both clinics can perform first aid procedures such as draining abscesses, cleaning out and filling cavities, temporary reconstruction, replacing old crowns and bridgework, repairing and improving dentures by removing pressure points, repairing denture breaks, etc.

Since 90 percent of dental treatment does not necessitate the full service of the Mobile Dental Clinic, Yad Sarah has introduced Portable Dental Kits at select Yad Sarah branches throughout the country, treating even more patients with ease and cost efficiency. Local volunteer dentists simply pick up the Dental Kits from the local Yad Sarah branch and then administer treatment in patients’ homes. Comprehensive examinations, plaque scaling, extractions, and all denture treatments can be administered with the portable Dental Kits. If necessary, a Mobile Dental Clinic is dispatched to perform x-rays or more sophisticated treatment.
